This study focuses primarily on the design and testing of an automated prototype for access control based on facial recognition technology, intended for implementation in the STEAM classroom at the Catholic University of Cuenca, on San Pablo de La Troncal campus. The system is proposed as an alternative to the current manual registration process, which aims to automate ongoing administrative processes. Traditional methods have proven impractical, as manual control tends to be slow, insecure, and prone to human error. In response, an automated system that influences technological advances in automation is proposed to provide greater speed, security, and reliability in data recording. The proposal aims to overcome the limitations of paper-based or basic digital records, which often lacks accuracy and efficiency. Consequently, a functional prototype that integrates Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) is presented to enhance access management in academic environments, while also offering an intuitive interface adaptable to future institutional requirements.

(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2025-10-30) Lozano Ochoa, Daniela Lissbeth; Rodriguez López, Manuel Guillermo; 0928933787
Moniliasis, caused by Moniliophthora roreri fungus, is one of the main diseases affecting cocoa production in Latin America, leading to significant losses. Early detection of this disease is crucial for implementing effective control strategies and minimizing economic impact. This article presents a model based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) for automatic detection and classification of moniliasis in cocoa pods using digital images. A total of 2,000 images of healthy and affected (moniliasis) cocoa were collected and preprocessed using data augmentation, data standardization, and resizing techniques. The model was trained with a sequential CNN architecture, including convolutional, pooling, flattening, and dense layers, optimized for binary classification. The model's performance was evaluated using precision, sensitivity, F1 score, and confusion matrix metrics, achieving a maximum accuracy of 98.3% in training and 99% in validation. The above results show that CNNs are effective tools for the automated identification of moniliasis, providing farmers with a technological resource that facilitates early detection and improves decision-making in crop management. This study demonstrates the great potential of artificial intelligence in precision agriculture, contributing to the sustainability and productivity of cocoa in Ecuador.

This thesis presents the design and validation of a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype developed in Unity, aimed at enhancing mathematics learning in high school school students in the canton of La Troncal, using the Meta Quest 2 VR headset. The proposal arises in response to recurring classroom problems, such as low student interest and difficulties in understanding abstract content through traditional methodologies typical of the exact sciences. The study corresponds to applied, descriptive-propositional research. An immersive environment was developed, designed as a virtual classroom integrating three interactive modules: a scale for solving equations, a quiz on geometric concepts, and a timed race. A pilot test was conducted with a sample of 17 high school students to validate the prototype, collecting their perceptions through evaluation instruments. The results showed high usability (~88%), a perceived improvement in mathematical understanding (~94%), and high levels of motivation and immersion (~88%). However, mild to moderate cybersickness was identified in approximately 41% of participants. The main limitations include a small sample size, the short session duration, and the need for adequate technological infrastructure. The study recommends strengthening teacher training in the pedagogical use of VR, developing comfort protocols, expanding the prototype’s content, and conducting more rigorous assessments. The project won third place at Expo InnovaTech 2025, standing out for its innovation and potential educational impact.

Manual classification of bananas (Musa Cavendish) is prone to errors and subjectivity, leading to economic losses in the agroindustry. This paper presents a quality control system based on convolutional neural networks for classifying bananas according to their condition through computer vision. The system distinguishes between two categories: “Good” and “Bad.” A ResNet18 convolutional neural network with transfer learning was used, trained with images photographed in a controlled environment. The model was integrated into a desktop application developed with OpenCV and Tkinter, enabling real-time classification using a webcam and incorporating HSV pre- filters to improve detection. The evaluation metrics showed an accuracy level above 90%, thus validating its performance. The system reduces human intervention, improves quality inspection, and serves as an effective prototype for future larger-scale implementations in the food industry.

The main objective of this thesis is to design and implement a functional prototype of a mesh-type wireless network powered by solar energy, applied to the rural community of “Normita” in the La Troncal canton, using an Action Research approach. The development of the project emcompassed all stages, from the diagnosis of connectivity needs to the installation and evaluation of the system, following a cycle of diagnosis, planning, action, and evaluation. Field data were collected through surveys, which confirmed the presence of a significant digital divide and a high demand for Internet access within the community. Based on these initial findings, a network architecture was designed with a redundant backbone (mesh) and a hybrid power system (electric grid and solar). This system was implemented and tested in real-world conditions. The technical tests demonstrated stability, high transmission capacity, and automatic switching in case of failures. Moreover, the satisfaction survey conducted after implementation revealed a positive user perception regarding the usefulness and the service quality. The results indicate that the prototype represents a technically feasible and socially relevant solution that helps reduce the digital divide in rural environments. Likewise, it establishes the foundation for future expansion and could be replicated in other communities with similar conditions, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4 and 9) related to quality education, innovation, and sustainable infrastructure.

This thesis primarily aims at designing a computer system for human talent management, using the agile Scrum methodology. The proposal seeks to optimize administrative processes related to talent management. For this reason, the system development focuses exclusively on the conceptual design stage, excluding software implementation. To this end, Scrum was applied as an agile framework, where the design process was organized into short testing cycles, which allowed for gradual improvements to the requirements. As a result, a detailed design of the system, called SITATH, was obtained. This system enables the generation of certificates and documents faster and more efficiently while ensuring compliance with the previously identified requirements. This establishes the foundation for future implementation and enhances the efficiency of human talent management processes within the organization.

Desarrollo de un Sistema de Gestión Académica para un Centro Educativo de Idiomas en La Troncal, Ecuador
(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Fajardo Vélez, Marlon Jonnathan; Rodriguez Lopez, Manuel Guillermo; 0941317018
This thesis discusses the importance of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in educational institution management, such as Corenglish. Although standard ERP systems can help manage these institutions, customized software is needed to meet the specific needs of each organization. In the case of Corenglish, they currently use an Excel register that is vulnerable and inefficient; therefore, they must implement an academic management system to improve their running. In the Ecuadorian context, the School Control Management System was implemented to enhance the management of grades in the country's public institutions. However, due to the drastic change in the grades management and the lack of teachers' technological preparation, a program to update their knowledge and the application of new teachers became necessary. In order to solve this problem, it is relevant to consider the theoretical construction of the curriculum of the educational communities and to couple new technological tools positively. Furthermore, questions were formulated to decipher the problem, such as the specific needs of Corenglish in academic management and how new technologies can be integrated into education successfully.
