dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a disorder manifested primarily by the presence of physical alterations, mental, facial malformations, and impairment of the central nervous system expressed as microcephaly and neurodevelopmental abnormalities, presented in a child due to maternal ingestion of alcoholic beverages during the gestational state. There is no amount, pattern, or timing of alcohol consumption during pregnancy that is safe for a developing embryo or fetus, therefore, it is very important to screen patients for alcohol consumption, inform them about the negative effects, such as low birth weight, facial malformations, neurocognitive alterations; and encourage abstinence. Objective: To investigate fetal alcohol syndrome. Methodology: This research focused on the review of scientific databases, such as Sciencedirect, Web of Science, Scopus, Springer, ProQuest, PubMed, Taylor & Francis, Medigraphic, Scielo, and Medlinplus; considering cross-sectional cohort, observational, descriptive, analytical, systematic review, quantitative, narrative, and retrospective analysis studies. Results: The factors associated with the appearance of fetal alcohol syndrome are socioeconomic level, maternal psychological profile, socio-family factors, among others. This causes the mother to ingest alcoholic beverages during pregnancy. Conclusion: There is an increase in the incidence of alcohol intake in pregnant women or women who are planning a pregnancy, so they should be aware of the risks of consumption and the importance of total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. Keywords: pregnancy, fetal death, miscarriage, alcoholism.
