Resumen
Introduction: The main component of cigarettes is nicotine, which interferes with the central
nervous system; however, it is not the only substance in cigarettes. The severity of periodontal
disease caused by cigarette smoking is also affected by other non-cigarette factors such as
frequency of oral hygiene, systemic diseases, and social and cultural environments. Objective:
To determine the effects of nicotine and its relationship with the soft tissues of the oral cavity.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study using data collection in scientific
databases such as SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, in which keywords such as
"Nicotine," "smoking," "Tobacco products," and "mouth" were used. Results: The first clinical
sign reflected in chronic smokers is the gingival recession, which facilitates the accumulation of
bacterial plaque that progressively affects the rest of the structures that support the tooth.
Periodontal disease is any condition that involves the tissues that support the teeth.
