Resumen
Introduction: There are several forms in which microorganisms may affect the state of materials that form part of buildings or archaeological sites, which are exposed outdoors, causing their decay. The first noticeable and apparent changes are probably the fading or pigmentation of their surfaces; however, other changes, more noticeable and more serious, occur later. These changes alter the mineral structure of the rocks, causing their progressive breakdown. Objective: To identify and determine heterotrophic bacteria contributing to the biodeterioration of the main structure ("Castillo" or "Elipse") of the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex. Methodology: Observational study, where samples were obtained and harvested from the Ingapirca Complex. Molecular Biology and Microbiology techniques were used to isolate and identify the bacteria and their morphological and physiological characteristics. Finally, the bacterial strains were identified and classified following bio-informatics methods. Results: Bacterial strains that cause biodeterioration in the leading site of the Ingapirca Archaeological Complex were reactivated and purified. Most of the 12 bacterial strains showed bioleaching capability. Bacterial outgrowth was recorded at different temperatures, with both micro-tolerant and mesophilic bacteria. The 12 isolates identified corresponded to species of the genus Pseudomonas. Based on the findings of this study, strategies for the restraint and handling of the biodeterioration of this historic monument will be able to be directed.
