| dc.description | In Ecuador, chronic child malnutrition (CCM) is a serious public health problem due to its effects on physical and cognitive development in early childhood. The objective of this study is to examine the factors associated with CCM in Ecuador during the 2022–2024 period. To this end, the study uses microdata from the National Survey on Child Malnutrition (ENDI), conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC, by its Spanish acronym). The study is based on Amartya Sen’s Development as Freedom theory, which conceives of malnutrition as a deprivation of capabilities. A non-experimental, cross-sectional design with an analytical-correlational scope is used, and a Probit model is estimated to calculate the probability of CCM based on socioeconomic variables, child characteristics, the mother’s educational level, housing conditions, sanitation availability, and territorial control variable. The results show that households with unsatisfied basic needs are associated with a higher probability of CCM, while belonging to the upper quintiles of economic well-being, having a mother with secondary or higher education, and having access to adequate sanitation are associated with a lower probability. Furthermore, significant differences are observed across age group, with a higher probability among children aged 12 to 23 months than among those aged 0 to 5 months. Given the correlational nature of the study, the findings do not imply causal relationships but provide evidence to guide the identification of groups and conditions associated with greater vulnerability to CCM in the Ecuadorian context. | |
