Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To know the leading oral and maxillofacial lesions or manifestations in child abuse victims.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bibliographic review was performed; it was a documentary investigation using journals and scientific articles as primary sources. Databases such as Redalyc, Journals, Elsevier, PubMed, and SciELO were used to collect essays and journals. Non-relevant articles, repeated reports, letters to the editor, and papers without information were excluded.

RESULTS: Injuries caused by child abuse can be; caries, mouth ulcers, pharyngeal lesions, burns, herpes, hematomas, and others.

CONCLUSIONS: Several lesions can reveal child abuse. Therefore, the dental professional must report the suspected child mistreatment case and gather the necessary information to process it properly.
