Predisposición familiar para espondilitis anquilosante: una serie de casos

Abstract

Antecedents: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) belongs to the group of diseases called spondyloarthropathies or spondyloarthritis. It is defined as a chronic, self-limiting inflammatory pathology that affects the articulated vertebral column, sacroiliac joint, and, to a lesser extent, the peripheral joints. It is characterized by synovitis, enthesitis, and ankylosis. Presentation of the cases: Three male members of the same family have a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis and present signs, symptoms, and a positive HLA-B27. Moreover, a female case presented no apparent signs of the disease but showed HLA-B27 positive. Objective: To describe the factors that determine the appearance of AS and why the human leukocyte antigen (HLA-B27) does not cause the disease in all people. Conclusions: As the diagnosis of AS represents a clinical challenge due to the rarity of the disease, the cases presented exhibit different clinical variations depending on age and sex, finding different discoveries in radiological imaging studies, as well as different radiological findings which influence directly in the evolution of each patient. Therefore, the disease must be known so that earlier detection can be carried out and better care can be provided
