Abstract

Introduction: The Dunning-Kruger effect highlights that humans have unknown aspects, even though they are in their immediate environment. Both professionals and patients might believe they possess the required expertise, and in reality, they may make mistakes due to miscalculations that are not recognized as such; they may perceive their performance as satisfactory when it is their lack of knowledge of what they should be doing. Objective: To investigate the concept and consequences of the Dunning-Kruger effect in dentistry. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature review examined the potential implications of the Dunning-Kruger effect on dental practice. Results: Dentists who are relatively new to the field and have limited experience are susceptible to falling into the Dunning-Kruger effect trap. Hence, they must engage in continuous learning and feedback mechanisms to avoid overestimating their capabilities. Conclusion: Upholding ethical practice norms in dentistry and a commitment to refrain from performing procedures beyond one's competence are advised.
