Efectividad de las férulas orales en el trastorno temporomandibular. Revisión de la literatura

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorder is characterized by clinical problems that primarily affect the temporomandibular joint, besides the myofascial muscles and associated structures, may eventually cause pain of non-dental origin in the orofacial, including the head, face, and structures of the cranio-cervico-maxillofacial region. This research is focused on the effectiveness of oral splints in temporomandibular disorders. The literature review was based on compiling information on oral splints in treating temporomandibular disorder. It was carried out through virtual exploration in different digital databases such as PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, Cochrane, Epistemonikos, Pesquisa, Taylor & Francis, Ovid, Dialnet, ProQuest, and Google Academic were explored; the research search was carried out from 2012 to 2022. After applying the inclusion criteria, 43 articles were obtained, determining that oral splints help control of joint pain; therefore, the symbiosis of a wide professional knowledge is required. The entire process must be correctly evaluated, from the plate placement to controlling of signs and symptoms to eliminate joint pain. In conclusion, oral splints have achieved excellent results in reducing various degrees of pain; to date, they are considered an effective therapy for temporomandibular joint disorders and dysfunction.
