Abstract

The sigmoid or sigma volvulus (SV) is commonly defined as a disease that affects a segment of the colon, which was first described in 1836 under the charge of Von Rokitansky, however, it is believed that there is oldest information in the Ebers Papyrus found in Egypt. The SV comprises a torsion or rotation at the axial level of a part of the large intestine, a place with abundant air on its narrow mesentery. The objective is based on the realization of a bibliographic review that includes current literature and evidence of VS. An extensive search was established in several databases such as: Scielo, Pubmed, UpToDate, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, Trip Database and Intramed together with the DESC (Descriptors in Health Sciences): Sigmoid Volvulus, Sigmoid Colon, among several original articles among them series of clinical cases, diagnostic and treatment studies regarding the management of SV. 21 articles were included in this review, where risk factors for the development of SV are known and successful treatment is related to an optimal early diagnosis and timely action. Despite knowledge of the objective of management, there is controversy with it, since a deferred sigmoidectomy is considered an effective procedure in those patients in whom endoscopic return has been successful in the first instance.
