Abstract

Resistant hypertension is defined as blood pressure (BP) above the recommended target after taking three antihypertensive drugs with synergistic actions at the maximum recommended tolerated doses, preferably including a diuretic, for at least 6 months, or when using four or more antihypertensive drugs even if the BP is controlled. To identify refractory arterial hypertension to treatment, definitions, and updated management. A compilation of information was carried out from high-impact articles on refractory arterial hypertension to treatment according to databases such as Medline, Scopus, Lilacs, Scielo, Science Direct, PUB MED, Cochrane, from 2018 to 2023. This bibliographic review allowed a detailed analysis of refractory arterial hypertension to treatment, identifying updated definitions, deepening its pathophysiology, and establishing guidelines for its management. The need for future research that provides more scientific evidence and contributes to a better understanding and clinical approach to this condition is highlighted. The information obtained through this study may be of great relevance to improve the quality of life of affected patients and reduce the disease burden associated with refractory arterial hypertension.
