Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify the influence of breastfeeding on the stomatognathic system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bibliographic review was carried out in the databases: Scopus, and PubMed with the following inclusion criteria: case and control studies, descriptive, and that are within the last five years, with the keywords , lactation, breastfeeding, breastfeeding, stomatognathic system, growth and development. For the selection of the articles, the title and summary of the articles were read in order to ensure that they are consistent with the proposed topic. RESULTS: The 12 studies obtained coordinated that breastfeeding directly influences the correct development and functioning of the stomatognathic system, as well as the adequate growth of the jaws, an ideal movement of the tongue. CONCLUSIONS: Breastfeeding contributed to the maturation of the stomatognathic system, largely due to the action of the muscles in the act of sucking, giving a correct development of the jaws, for a period equal to or greater than 6 months, with less probability of carrying habits parafunctional that develop the appearance of open bite, deep palate, mandibular micrognathism, malocclusion, producing oral problems in the short and long term, being breastfeeding essential in the development and quality of life of the pediatric patient, for which the dentist must have all the necessary knowledge and that it can transmit to the mothers who come to the consultation since, in the absence of breastfeeding, it presents alterations in orofacial maturation.
