Ítem Acceso Abierto Enfermedades prevalentes en adultos mayores en centros gerontológicos: Una revisión sistemática(Universidad Católica de Cuenca, 2023) Loja Siguencia, Tatiana Marcela; Muñoz Zaruma, Maria Cristina; Rojas Verdugo, Paola; 030262557-9; 030301502-8Older adults are individuals aged 65 or older who experience a continuous and progressive deterioration in vital functions, which limits their development and capacity to meet their basic needs. In this scenario, a large part of this population group requires the accompaniment and care of another person, whether from their close socio-family environment or a healthcare professional, as is the case with gerontological centers. Methodology: This study consists of a systematic review carried out under a qualitative approach and the PRISMA method, taking into account 20 scientific articles obtained from different sources of information such as SciELO, Redalyc, Medline, Scopus, LILACS, and other ProQuest databases of the Catholic University of Cuenca. Results: Geriatric institutions cannot replace the family environment for older adults; however, they are a reliable alternative for all the families that do not have the time or the necessary experience to meet the needs of their seniors without abandoning or neglecting them. Conclusions: Among the prevalent ailments observed in older adults residing in gerontological institutions are diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension, cancer, chronic afflictions, cardiovascular, renal conditions, and other psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, and dementia. Keywords: older adults, prevalent ailments, gerontological institutions, physical health, mental health.
