Ítem Acceso Abierto Paradoja de la obesidad en pacientes adultos mayores(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2024) Romero Romero, Nadia Daniela; Barros Pelaéz, Ana Gabriela; 0706222635Introduction: Obesity is regarded as a risk factor for various diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular pathologies, joint problems and several types of cancer for any age group. Some studies have considered it a protective factor in elderly patients, as they may experience less physical frailty than their thin counterparts. Therefore, knowing the types of benefits these patients present is relevant. Literature Review: Obesity in older adults may provide an energy reserve capacity in the form of fat, which is considered an advantage since it can help to face periods of food shortage. In addition, it provides some protection against the loss of muscle mass. When suffering from a chronic disease, greater survival could be considered due to increased energy storage capacity. Conclusion: It is essential to address the complexity of obesity and health in older adults in a nuanced and multifaceted approach. Although obesity is considered a risk factor, this review highlights certain advantages in these patients. Moreover, it is crucial to adopt a balanced and evidence-based approach when evaluating this relationship, avoiding interpreting the findings as a justification for maintaining an unhealthy body weight. Finally, the importance of individualized, patient-centered medical care is emphasized.
