Pharmacodynamic interactions are considered to be the most common to occur; however, pharmacokinetic interactions can be controlled since they are dependent on the health system and the patient. Objective: To characterize drug-drug interactions in the elderly population in recent years based on the benefit-risk ratio according to their characteristics such as sex, age, preexisting diseases, and level of schooling. Materials and methods: The methodology used was of the bibliographic documentary type based on the compilation of information on pharmacokinetic interactions in different databases. Results: In response, polypharmacy is considered to be the abuse of drugs, being nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that should be used with greater caution since prolonged use can cause cardiac, hepatic, and renal problems, with greater effect in patients with arterial hypertension, low schooling, and women. Conclusion: Interactions should be controlled by a multidisciplinary team, considering the most vulnerable patients since the incidence of polypharmacy has increased significantly and its prevention through systems is essential to improve the quality of life and to reduce economic costs to the health system.
