Introduction: Traffic accidents have become the top cause of death worldwide and, for this reason, can be considered a pandemic. Objective: This study aimed to determine the main epidemiological characteristics of traffic accidents in the province of Cañar, period 2019-2021. Methodology: A descriptive, ecological, retrospective, quantitative study of a registry of 196 accidents from January 2019 to December 31, 2021. To analyze the statistical data, Microsoft Excel 2010® and the SPSS v.26® statistical package were used. Results: Traffic accidents were the most frequent in October (11.7%). The highest number of injured was in 2019 (n=64). The mortality rate in the period evaluated averaged 1.6 deaths per 10,000 inhabitants. The leading causes of traffic accidents were recklessness and carelessness of the driver at 41%, followed by drunkenness or drugs at 7%. According to the type of accident, there was a higher prevalence of crashes (46.4%), loss of lane (17.9%), and runs over (15.3%). Conclusion: The frequency of traffic accidents was lower in 2020 compared to 2019 and 2021.
