It emerged as a potential health threat, so it was important to understand the prevalence, biosafety, disease complications, therapeutic approach, and nursing interventions in response to the pandemic. Methodology: A bibliographic review was carried out in scientific databases such as ProQuest, Redalyc, Elsevier, SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science, and NNNConsult software. Results: Based on COVID-19 spread data, Brazil had the highest prevalence in Latin America. Prevention strategies included using masks, confinement, and hand hygiene. There was no treatment to cure the disease, so drugs were used empirically. The most frequent complication was the deterioration of pulmonary function, such as ARDS; the most critical interventions in the ICU were pronation and skin care. Conclusion: This disease also caused social, economic, and institutional damage. In addition, its contagion was due to misinformation, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of PPE. About a year later, vaccines such as Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Sinovac became available. The most frequent complications of COVID-19 affected the respiratory and circulatory systems. Nursing and the health team collaborated in educating about prevention through hygiene standards and the importance of immunization against COVID-19.
