Revisión de la literatura(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Valdiviezo Falconí, Heivi Valeria; Calle Prado, María Daniela; 0706991056Introduction: Hypomineralization is a qualitative defect caused by a disorder in the early calcification stage. Hypomineralization includes incisor molar hypomineralization (IMH) that affects permanent molars and incisors with dullness ranging from white to yellow- brown. On the other hand, in primary dentition, hypomineralization of the second primary molar (HSMP) is also reported, appearing as an opaque occlusal surface injury. Objectives: to gather up-to-date information related to the diagnosis, prevalence, etiology, risk factors, and treatment for primary second molar hypomineralization. Material and methods: A literature review on HSMP was conducted online in different scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Medigraphic, Researchgate, and Dialnet. Fifty articles that were published from the year 2017 to 2022 were used as inclusion criteria. Results: Hypomineralization of the primary second molar is associated with etiological factors such as antibiotic use and childhood diseases during the first year of life. Conclusions: Primary second molar hypomineralization is known as the appearance of white-brown spots on the molars. There are some treatment options, and minimally invasive interventions are recommended, which include the use of fluoride and pit or fissure sealants. In more severe cases, restorative treatments with different materials such as glass ionomers, resins, pre-fabricated metal crowns, and zirconium crowns may be necessary.
