In Ecuador, there is a lack of specific standards for planning urban roads; therefore, there is a necessity to research International Standards associated with urban roads geometric design in order to establish parameters for an urban geometric design which guarantees the functionality, safety, and convenience of transportation. With the design recommendations given by the NEVI-12 the geometric design of the Colón, San Antonio and 24 de Mayo avenues was carried out; which are in the urban perimeter of the city of Cañar, afterwards an estimation of the missing parameters by the Ecuadorian Standard in comparison with the International Standards was carried out and it was possible to establish in a sequential manner parameters such as: hierarchy of urban roads, design speeds based on the road ranking, cambers, geometry of the designed vehicle, correct election of the design axis, maximum and minimum slopes for new projects, track width including the bus stop area, bike lanes, berms, media strips and pedestrian areas; also indicating the speed to be used, radii for central separators and islet areas for the geometric design of a junction.
