- ÍtemAcceso AbiertoEficacia de la estimulación magnética transcraneal en pacientes latinoamericanos con trastorno depresivo(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Samaniego Fernández, María Fernanda; Cañizares Abril, Lauro Esteban; 070483119-7Background: Depressive disorder is characterized by a series of emotional or mood symptoms that affect the person's performance in different areas of life, at work, personal, social, and academic levels. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a treatment that shows positive and safe results for patients with depression. Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of TMS in young people with depressive disorder using a systematic review of scientific literature. Methodology: It consisted of a literature review based on high-impact journals such as Redalyc, SciELO, and PubMed, accessing search engines from Google Scholar. Results: Few clinical trials have been developed in Latin America; however, they have shown favorable results on depression. Excitatory and inhibitory stimulation protocols at different frequencies show considerable response and remission rates in terms of symptoms of the disorder; however, inhibitory protocols at low frequencies are the most effective due to their effects on neurophysiological regulation, symptomatology, and cortical activity. The TMS effects vary according to the protocol; these can be mild and transient such as headache, neck discomfort, and grogginess. Conclusions: Magnetic stimulation provides highly effective results, capable of remitting or attenuating psychiatric disorders such as depression without causing significant side effects. In addition, clinical trials on TMS in depression in young adults have so far shown improved efficacy in achieving significant improvements in depressive symptomatology.
