Revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2020) Sánchez Velásquez, Jonnathan Marcelo; Aguilar Maldonado, José David; 0302112750; ., .AIM: The aim of this research was to gather scientific evidence on the prevalence, etiology, classification, diagnostic methods, and the different surgical techniques in canine retention. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic computerized search of studies was conducted in the PubMed, Scielo, Cochrane and Redalyc databases. The systematic search was performed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS: 65 articles were identified as relevant to the topic. Of these 27 studies were on the treatment of impacted maxillary canines, 31 reviews dealt with the diagnostic methods of impacted maxillary canines, 5 original articles referring to the prevalence of retained canines and 2 referring to the etiology of the aforementioned entity. CONCLUSIONS: Retained, impacted or impacted maxillary canines are diagnosed by orthopantomography or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (Cone Beam) is the diagnostic method using the KPG index for their specific location. Early diagnosis added to palatal or mandibular expansion will avoid impaction of canines. Combined surgery and orthodontic treatment is used to treat retained canines, including or impacted permanent dentition.
