Revisión de la literatura.(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Ochoa Collaguazo, Karen Jessenia; Ramos Montiel, Ronald Roossevelt; 0106909641Introduction: External cervical resorption (ECR) is the loss of hard dental tissue, and its origin is on the cervical aspect of the root surface that extends apically, coronally, and circumferentially into the dentin. Objective: To determine the etiology of external cervical resorption and its interaction with the possible associated factors that trigger its appearance. Materials and Methods: The literature was selected using the following electronic databases: PubMed, Lilacs, Scopus, Cochrane, Epistemonikos, Pesquisa, Taylor & Francis, Ovid, Dialnet, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. The keywords used were etiology, external, cervical, and resorption. The search was done with no language limit for articles published from 2012 to 2022. Results: After executing the inclusion criteria in the first filtering, a total of 709 were obtained, 582 after the second filtering and 15 articles were finally reviewed. ECR increases its occurrence because the dentin is exposed and goes in the direction of the affected parts because it may lack cementum on the root surface. Conclusion: ECR affects permanent teeth, mainly the anterior teeth. Several predisposing factors have been described, such as orthodontic treatment, dental trauma, and dental whitening as the most relevant. In addition, due to a lack of research, its cause cannot be defined.
