It is considered an epidemic and a general public health problem, primarily caused by the addiction generated by the nicotine present in cigarettes. Objective: To determine the global prevalence of lung cancer, the relationship between smoking and lung cancer, complications, treatment for this disease, and interventions performed by nurses. Methodology: The study consisted of a literature review of the last five years, collecting information from Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases. In addition, a search strategy was applied using a combination of keywords and Boolean operators, resulting in the inclusion of 56 articles. Results: The prevalence of lung neoplasia is high worldwide, occurring more frequently in men than women. Smoking is the leading risk factor due to the carcinogenic substances it contains, and it also generates other consequences, such as respiratory and cardiovascular complications. The treatment for smoking includes psychosocial and pharmacological therapy. Conclusion: Smoking is associated with an increased risk for lung neoplasia. It is linked to a higher tendency to develop neoplastic molecules such as programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) and induces genetic mutations that lead to the inactivation of tumor suppressor proteins. Keywords: Nursing Care, Tobacco, Tobacco Cessation, Lung Neoplasms, smoking.
