This bibliographic review aimed to analyze drug dependence in the prison system, its consequences, and psychological treatment in Latin America. In addition, the study aimed to describe the most prevalent drugs in the prison system, analyze the psychological consequences of drug dependence, and outline the socio-sanitary treatment in the studied population. The study employed a descriptive design based on a qualitative approach, utilizing articles published in established years in Latin America, in Spanish and English. A total of 57 scientific articles from various digital journals were used. The results revealed that the psychoactive substances with the highest level of consumption within the prison system in Latin America are alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine. Addiction to these substances generates consequences, including memory disorders, disorders associated with consumption, and blood diseases due to needle sharing, among others. Therefore, the psychological treatment developed in the prison systems was investigated through programs and therapies with a higher level of effectiveness, such as cognitive behavioral and gestalt therapy, to improve inmates’ adaptation to the environment and their social reintegration. Finally, it was concluded that drug dependence in the prison system develops different care situations in the inmates, resulting in mental and physical health problems.
