MATERIAL ANO METHODS: The methodology applied was descriptive cross-sectional on the epidemiological aspects, the sample consisted of 303 schoolchildren of 12 years of age, of which 54% corresponded to females and 46% males. For the determination of diseases, examiners were calibrated and standardized universally according to the criteria of the World Health Organization on the use of epidemiological indices regarding permanent dentition. RESUL TS: The results obtained were that the prevalence of caries in schoolchildren of 12 years of age in the city of Azogues is 51 %, in addition it was found that the distribution of the disease according to sex is greater in the female gender showing values of 55% , compared to the male sex, 45% presented, in terms of the prevalence of caries in private institutions show a higher percentage of 64%, while in public institutions that show a percentage of 36%, according to the experience of caries the highest percentage shows very low 50%, in relation to the very high leve! a percentage of 5% and a population CPOD index of 2.08 was evidenced. CONCLUSION: In the results obtained, it was concluded that the prevalence of caries in 12-year-old schoolchildren is high, since more than half of the students had it, with a higher incidence in the female gender and a high prevalence in private institutions.
