Formula milk has a higher protein concentration than breast milk; formula-fed infants have higher insulin concentrations, increasing adipose tissue deposition and subsequent weight gain. Objective: To identify the prevalence of infant obesity and the factors associated with formula milk consumption. Also, the complications of childhood obesity, the therapeutic approach, and the nursing role in promoting breastfeeding. Methodology: A literature review study was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, SciELO and Medigraphic, Scopus, Redalyc, IntraMed, resulting in the selection of 50 relevant scientific articles. Results: The prevalence of infant obesity associated with formula milk consumption is increasing, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The mother's perception of insufficient breast milk is the main factor associated with formula milk consumption. The most common health complications in overweight infants are metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. The therapeutic approach and the role of nursing in childhood obesity are based on promotion and education on healthy habits and breastfeeding. Conclusion: Infant obesity associated with the consumption of formula milk is a growing problem that influences the development of multiple diseases. Nurses have an active role in the prevention of this type of complications. Keywords: obesity, infant formula, nursing care, prevention.
