It is common in women between 15 and 24 years of age, often in non-pregnant women, and has a strong relationship with sexually transmitted diseases. Objective: To describe the relationship between infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. Methodology: A literature review with the support of the PRISMA guidelines; scientific articles published in English and Spanish journals were reviewed. The searches were performed with explicit information from computer websites such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, and SciELO. The data was processed using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes method (PICO). Results: Thirty-two articles analyzing the relationship between pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility were collected. The risk factors for infertility and the final results obtained in each reviewed research were evaluated. Conclusions: PID refers to a group of infectious diseases in the female upper genital tract that cause discomfort, and if untreated and recurrent, their sequelae can be severe, including infertility. Prevalence values of PID associated with infertility vary according to the study population. Several factors besides infections may favor infertility, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, tubal factors, and alcohol consumption.
