The vast field of personality encompasses a range of traits and disorders that emerge due to various events that alter how a person thinks, feels, and acts. These disorders are characterized by persistent, dysfunctional behavior patterns, challenging the recovery process. Objective. To determine the association between borderline personality disorder and substance use disorder through a bibliographic review of studies in Latin America. Methodology. With a qualitative approach, bibliographic research of descriptive scope has been developed, using digital databases and search criteria. The data obtained was verified in a registration form in three stages (identification, screening, and inclusion). Results. Thirty-nine documents from 12 Latin American countries were analyzed, revealing the following data: in Argentina, 50% of the population consumes alcohol; in Uruguay, 51%; in Chile, 34% smoke tobacco and, 15% use marijuana, mainly young men between 18 and 25 years old. It has been observed that between 3% and 6% of the general population meet the criteria for borderline personality disorder in their lifetime. However, this number increases to more than 20% in populations with substance use disorders. Conclusion. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are the most consumed substances in Latin America. In addition, a higher prevalence of borderline personality disorder diagnosis was found in the female sex, closely linked to self-injurious behaviors. These findings support the association between both disorders.
