Objective: To analyze the scientific literature on the understanding and use of contraceptives among university students. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted employing the PRISMA method; the search was performed using IT tools such as SciELO, Dialnet, CUIDEN, Research Bible, Lilacs, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Official Pages, in the course the last five years. Results: Most students know contraceptive methods, the most used being the male condom and the pill. There are factors related to the non-use of contraceptive methods, such as male sex, the length of relationship with the partner due to the increased confidence of not contracting an STD, lack of awareness, the Christian religion, and the adverse effects produced by them. However, scientific studies show that women are responsible for the use of contraceptives, and university students in health careers know more about contraception. Conclusion: It is considered that the university population not related to health careers and the lack of knowledge influence the non-use of contraceptives. So it is essential to continue promoting strategies to reduce negative factors in managing Sexual and Reproductive Health.
