Scientists worldwide have developed vaccines to reduce hospitalizations and deaths associated with this disease. Objective: To analyze the characteristics of the vaccinated and unvaccinated population for COVID-19 in Cuenca city in 2021. Method: Secondary data study of quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective design. The unit of analysis was 6,941 records of people over 18 years of age, including men and women, residents in Cuenca, surveyed by the Ecuadorian Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC by its Spanish acronym). The instrument was a data collection form with the variables of interest. Results: Most of the participants were women (53.2%), living in urban areas 92.8%, single 50.1%, COVID-19 infected 21.5%, vaccinated 86.5%, second dose 87.1%, SINOVAC® (50.63%), not interested in being vaccinated 50.21%, mainly because of doubts about the vaccine efficacy (70.02%). Conclusion: Vaccination is a key strategy in the fight against COVID-19. Vaccine refusal is an obstacle with deeply-rooted sociocultural factors.
