- ÍtemAcceso AbiertoEnfermedad Celíaca en pacientes con Síndrome de Intestino Irritable(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2021) Chiliquinga Rivera, Cristian Jhillson; Crespo Vintimilla, Edgar Adriano; 030256809; ., .lntroduction : For a long time, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Celiac Disease (CD) were considered as two different pathologies. However, it does not appear to be so clear, since IBS is considered a chronic gastrointestinal disorder , and CD presents as a chronic inflammation and atrophy of the intestinal mucosa, which share similar clinical characteristics that do not make it possible to distinguish one from the other mainly characterized by abdominal pain, abdominal distension and alterations in bowel habit (constipation, diarrhea or both). Objective: To assess the level of scientific evidence that exists on celiac disease in patients with irritable bowel syndrome . Method: The present study was based on a systematic review of scientific research, found in severa! systems available on the network such as Medline, PuBMeD, Elsevier, Scielo, among others, as well as in Google Scholar, and that met the inclusion criteria. Results: There is a higher prevalence of CD in patients initially diagnosed with IBS, reaching 5% of cases and with a risk of up to 4 times higher than the general population. Conclusions: CD and IBS are two similar pathologies. lt is important to establish a differential diagnosis between the two, while looking for an effective treatment and improve the quality of lite of the patient.
