Revisión de la literatura.(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Córdova Carreño, Rosa Alexandra; Cuenca León, Katherine de los Ángeles; 1400995666Candida albicans is one of the main pathogens present in the oral cavity causing fungal skin or mucosal sores. Objective: To gather information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of both conventional therapies and phytotherapy regarding oral candidiasis. Materials and methods: A literature review through the collection of articles in different databases, using the keywords "Phytotherapy," "candidiasis, oral," "candida albicans," "oils, volatile," and "antifungal agents" checked using the Boolean operators "AND" "OR" "NOT" respectively in Mesh, and obtaining information on conventional therapy versus phytotherapy in oral candidiasis. Results: The results showed that the two types of treatments are effective in treating fungal cells. Due to their carvacrol and thymol components, oregano oil and lemon verbena have an antifungal effect compared to nystatin, showing a superior inhibitory effect compared to lemon verbena. Conclusion: The literature review has shown that phytotherapy is a natural antifungal that helps control candida sores. Compared with conventional therapy, it shows that both treatments fulfill their purpose completely and that they have advantages and disadvantages in their application.
