Objective: To report the surgical case of Gossypiboma as a medical malpractice in order to raise awareness in the medical community. Methodology: Narrative clinical case report. Case presentation: Mestizo female patient, 41 years old, from El Pan, Paute. With a surgical history of hysterectomy six months ago at the base hospital, she went to a private clinic because of intense abdominal pain, lack of gas and stool elimination, as well as a palpable mass in the hypogastrium. Emergency admission was decided, imaging studies were performed and a foreign body to be investigated was detected. The patient underwent hemodynamic stabilization, antibiotic therapy, intravenous fluids and then underwent exploratory laparotomy, where a cystic mass of 15x10cm was found, debridement of adhesion was performed, opening of the cystic mass for the extraction of its contents, presence of purulent liquid and two structures of textile appearance, followed by washing of the peritoneal cavity and suturing of the wall. The case evolves favorably. Conclusion: Gossypiboma is a rare event, underestimated for medico-legal reasons, hence the importance of prevention, with the use of the WHO safety protocol, associated with good control and education of operating room personnel.
