    Background: Family dysfunction is one of the main factors that influence the academic performance of university students, which can have repercussions in their careers both in the short and long term, generating different problems at the academic level. Objective: To determine the influence of family dysfunction on the academic performance of university students, Azogues 2020. Materials and methods: This research was conducted in a non-experimental, cross-sectional, and quantitative study, with a census method and a sample of 623 university students; the database analysis was performed through the SPSS V20 program. Results: It was found that 10.1% of students had poor performance, and most were female. Most of them had a nuclear family type, 42.9% had family dysfunction, and 14.3% of the participants had severe family dysfunction. The significant variables were age, since those older than 20 years had a higher risk in 90% (PR 1.9; 95%CI 1.2-3.1), women 60% (PR 1.6; 95%CI 1.0-2.6) and family dysfunction 40% (PR 0.4; 95%CI 0.26-0.66). On the other side, the type of family and the current economic situation had no influence. Conclusions: Students with family dysfunction were at greater risk of having low academic performance, as were students over 20 years of age and women.
