In order to adequately address this topic, it was essential to understand the concept of criminality to fulfill the research objective, which was to analyze the underlying causes of criminal behavior and its relationship with the most common crimes in Latin America. Also, to evaluate the effectiveness of social reinsertion programs in the region whose guidelines were granted by the scientific methodology. This study focused on non-experimental qualitative research with a descriptive scope. The qualitative approach was selected due to its suitability to explore in depth the relationships between concepts related to criminal behavior, personality, and the prison situation in Latin America. The narrative review was carried out by consulting scientific articles in indexed databases. It was concluded that criminal behavior in Latin America is directly interrelated with the biopsychosocial conditions of each individual. Considering that the reproduction of criminal behavior and recidivism are superimposed on cognitive constructs that have been analyzed from different postulates of psychology, highlighting the need to incorporate a psychological component in the reinsertion programs used in Latin America to meet the objective of social rehabilitation.
