Ítem Acceso Abierto Presencia de levaduras potencialmente patógenas en ambientes extremos domésticos del Oriente ecuatoriano(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2024) García Marín, Andrés Nicolás; Lazo Alvarado, Julio Humberto; Yarzabal Rodríguez, Luis Andrés; 0106434590; 0106047491Introduction: This research identified and characterized potentially pathogenic yeasts in extreme domestic environments, specifically in dishwashers in the Amazon region of eastern Ecuador. Objective: To evaluate the survivability of yeasts under adverse conditions and their potential to cause infections in humans Methodology: Dishwasher samples were collected from households and cultured on Sabouraud Agar to isolate yeasts. Subsequently, the isolates were morphologically and microscopically characterized, and virulence tests, such as hemolysis and phospholipase production, were performed. Molecular identification was conducted by amplification of the ITS region of the DNA, followed by sequencing and analysis with the BLASTN program to determine the species present. Results: The results showed the presence of several yeast species, including Candida and Rhodotorula. Some strains showed resistance to high temperatures (up to 40°C) and the ability to produce phospholipases and hemolysins. However, no proteolytic activity was detected in the isolates. Conclusion: The findings suggest that yeasts present in extreme domestic environments could potentially risk human health, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
