These cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the bile ducts, which transport bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine. Although various factors can cause them, common bile duct cysts are often the result of congenital malformations. This condition may have nonspecific symptoms or ones similar to other digestive system diseases, making diagnosis challenging. The treatment of common bile duct cysts can vary depending on several factors, like the patient's age, the size of the cyst, and the presence of symptoms. If the cyst is small and asymptomatic, it may not require treatment; however, if the cyst is large or causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice, or recurrent infections, surgery may be necessary to remove the cyst, as well as reconstruction of the biliary tract; so, its treatment should be individualized. Given the above, this research aims to describe effective therapeutic management for biliary tree cystic pathology and the possible postoperative complications. It utilizes a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach to obtain relevant information on the topic through digital platforms such as Scielo, Google Scholar, and PubMed from 2019 to 2023.
