This research was conducted at the confluence of the Tarqui and Yanuncay Rivers in the city of Cuenca, aiming to characterize surface velocities and estimate discharge during flood events using the non-intrusive Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) technique. The study addresses the limited availability of hydraulic information under high-flow conditions and the need to apply safe and reliable methodologies that contribute to flood risk management. Experimental measurements were carried out under high-flow conditions by processing drone-captured videos analyzed using the RIVeR software, which enabled the acquisition of surface velocity fields and the analysis of their distribution across each study section. The results showed that the highest velocities were concentrated along the main flow axis, with lower values toward the river edges. Additionally, a two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model was implemented, showing a high correlation with the experimental data, thereby validating the consistency of the method used. The findings indicate that the LSPIV technique performs adequately when applied in sections with favorable geometric and hydraulic conditions, recording average differences of less than 6% compared to reference data. Additionally, representative discharges were estimated, with the confluence area showing the highest values, exceeding 70 m³/s, confirming the applicability of the method for hydraulic characterization under flood conditions.

Optimización de rutas de recolección bajo los criterios de sostenibilidad para la EMMAIPC-EP del pueblo cañari mediante SIG
(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2026) Zamora Simbaina, Moisés
This research was conducted in the canton of Cañar, including the urban parish of Cañar as well as the rural parishes of Honorato Vásquez and Chorocopte, with the aim of optimizing urban solid waste collection routes and strengthening the integrated management of solid waste by the Municipal Public Company of Comprehensive Cleaning of the Cañari People (EMMAIPC-EP, by its acronym in Spanish). The methodology was based on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), employing ArcGIS V.10.5 software and its Network Analyst tool. The results show that approximately 402.11 tons of urban solid waste are generated monthly in the study area (EMMAIPC, 2023). In the initial scenario, the collection system operated with eleven micro-routes, covering a total of 281.86 km and requiring approximately 2,668 minutes (44.46 hours) of operation. After optimization, the system was restructured into ten micro-routes, resulting in a reduction of 5.75 km in the distance traveled, which demonstrated a significant improvement in operational efficiency and compliance with environmental and economic sustainability criteria.
