El periodonto es un conjunto de tejidos que proveen soporte y protección a las piezas dentarias, cuando este conjunto pasa por un tratamiento ortodóncico se ve expuesto a patologías como la recesión gingival, la cual se define como una traslación del margen gingival apicalmente a la unión cemento esmalte, con la consecuente exposición de la raíz del diente desarrollado paulatinamente, si no es tratada como es debido puede afectar funcional y estéticamente al paciente. Objetivo. Describir las recesiones gingivales como efecto del uso de aparatología ortodóncica Metodología. La presente Revisión de la Literatura se desarrollará en base a metodología PRISMA con única fuente de datos PubMed utilizando DeCS. Conclusiones y Resultados. En conclusión, la presente revisión demuestra que la aparatología ortodóncica no tiene un efecto negativo propiamente en el tejido periodontal, pues su función es mover las piezas dentales, sin embargo, puede incurrir en dificultar la higiene bucal, así como también generar cambios en la encía al ser un huésped que no forma parte de la boca en sí. El manejo correcto del profesional y la colaboración del paciente permite prevenir esta enfermedad y tratarla a tiempo en caso de presentarse.Background:The periodontium comprises a group of tissues that provide support and protection to the dental pieces. During orthodontic treatment, this tissue set is exposed to pathologies, such as gingival recession, which is defined as an apical translation of the gingival margin towards the cement-enamel junction, with the consequent exposure of the tooth’s root. If left untreated, it can have functional and esthetic implications for the patient. Objective: To describe gingival recessions as an effect of orthodontic appliance usage. Methodology: This Bibliographic review was developed based on PRISMA methodology with exclusively PubMed data sources using DeCS. Conclusions and Results: In conclusion, this review shows that orthodontic appliances do not affect periodontal tissue since their function is to move the dental pieces; however, they can make oral hygiene difficult and generate changes in the gingiva since they are foreign objects and are not part of the oral cavity.
