Revisión de la literatura(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Mantilla Crespo, Mireya Doménica; Ramos Montiel, Ronald Roossevelt; 0350015434Introduction: Malocclusion is a dentofacial anomaly, which refers to inadequate occlusion and dysfunctional craniofacial relationships, affecting individuals' esthetics and general well-being. Removable devices are widely used to treat malocclusions and have been shown to improve dental and skeletal treatment outcomes in growing children. Objective: To review updated literature regarding removable maxillary/mandibular orthopedics in growth modifications. Methods: It was a descriptive, retrospective research, which accessed the electronic databases in English PubMed/Medline, Elsevier, Epistemonikos, and Google Scholar; and in Spanish imbiomed.org, SciELO.org, and Google Scholar. The time limits for the search were January 2011 to June 2022. The review covered aspects of removable orthopedic devices and their modifications in growth. Results: Studies reported that functional orthopedic appliances are, for children, the most commonly used devices to reposition and redirect jaw growth. These devices are designed to take advantage of natural forces, such as those produced by muscle and jaw growth. Conclusion: Removable maxillary/mandibular orthopedics can promote skeletal growth, making it an excellent therapeutic option for Class II and Class III patients with skeletal malocclusions.
