Nowadays severa! factors affect pregnancy whether these are maternal infections, emotional conditions, socioeconomic status, alcohol, and other drug use. Objective: Identify the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors that predispose and trigger a preterm birth through a bibliographic study. Materials and Methods: A database search is carried out (Pubmed, Google Scholar, NCBI, Cochrane, official internet pages ofthe World Health Organization, PAHO, MPH) in search ofpublished articles between 2016 and April 2021. Results: Preterm birth is an issue of great concern in the field ofhealth. There are severa! risk factors, however, those that occur very frequently are the following: first of all, urinary tract infection (UTI), premature rupture of membranes, obesity before pregnancy, drug use, maternal age, and to a lesser extent race and ethnicity. And the most frequent short-term complication 'is respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and long-term neurodevelopmental delay. Conclusion: Currently severa! risk factors induce preterm labor, among the main ones we find urinary infections, and secondly the premature rupture of membranes, which have short- and long-term consequences in the neonate.
