A process to treat cancer is cell death, which is currently related to ferroptosis. It is a cell death caused by lipid peroxidation, which plays a vital role in the therapy of this disease because cancer cells consume a large amount of iron more than healthy cells, and ferroptosis ─being a type of cell death that depends on iron─ is different from apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy. As a result, it is believed that this type of cell death can reverse the existing resistance to drugs. General objective: To determine the role of ferroptosis as a type of cell death in the therapeutic development of cancer. Methodology: A bibliographic review of articles in both English and Spanish was carried out through the following databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web Of Science, and Redalyc from the last five years. Results: There were 205 articles selected, ten were excluded since they were duplicates, 160 papers were rejected because they did not meet the selection criteria, 35 articles were entirely reviewed, and finally eight articles were selected to obtain results. Conclusions: Therapeutics against cancer continue to be a challenge in the population. Currently, despite the advances that have been achieved with ferroptosis in experimental designs, it still continues to present difficulties since it has not been possible to study its effectiveness in the human population. It is expected that ferroptosis can later be used favorably in treating cancer, either alone or in combination.
