The methodology used was prospective, descriptive, with a quantitative cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of all first-year male and female students in the third year of high school (n = 120). The instrument applied was a battery that combined Beck's depression inventory, Beck's despair scale, Rosemberg's self-esteem scale and Okasha's suicide scale. The data processing was carried out using the statistical package of SPSS 25 and Microsoft Excel 2016. The results found that the majority of participants are between 16 and 17 years old (54%), live in the rural area (67.5%) and they are in second year of high school (40%). The prevalence of suicide risk according to the level of hopelessness was 35.8%; the Okasha scale detected a prevalence of self-lithic attempt of 15%; the level of low self-esteem variable around 25%, finding statistical significance with the self-lithic attempt; and, evaluated depression as one of the risk factors, registering 5% of severe depression. It is concluded that the self-lithic (suicidal) attempt is a global problem that affects all social classes and consumption, it becomes one of the first causes of death in adolescents, mainly associated with depression and a low level of self-esteem.
