Factores socioeconómicos asociados a la caries dental: Revisión sistemática.
(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2024) Bustamante Serpa , Estefani Pamela; Morán Puma, Nicole Priscila; Tintin Rea, Jose Fernando; 0302790274; 0350306577
Introduction: Dental caries is considered one of the most significant global health problems, affecting all age groups. It is essential to analyze whether disparities in individuals' living conditions impact the development of dental caries. Evidence shows that individuals with lower socioeconomic status are at a higher risk of oral health deficiencies compared to those with higher socioeconomic levels. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between socioeconomic factors and dental caries. Methodology: A systematic review used DeCS and MeSH descriptors to obtain keywords, employing Boolean operators AND and OR. Employing the PRISMA methodology, 11 articles were selected for the study. Results: The review demonstrated a statistically significant association between major socioeconomic factors and dental caries, showing that lower income and limited access to education increase the likelihood of developing dental cavities. Conclusion: The most relevant socioeconomic factors contributing to the progression of dental caries are family income, education level, and socioeconomic status. However, factors such as the head of the household's occupation, access to oral health care, and nationality were also analyzed, but no positive correlation could be established. Keywords: socioeconomic factors, dental caries, carious lesions.

Atención odontológica en pacientes pediátricos con trastornos del espectro autista. Revisión bibliográfica

In dental consultations, the lack of knowledge on how to treat patients with autism spectrum disorders could increase episodes of periodontal disease, cavities, or the premature loss of primary teeth. This study aimed to identify the minimum considerations before providing dental care to pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorders. The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. Searching documents addressing the care of pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorders was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, SciELO, Redalyc, and Web of Science. The analysis of the scientific literature was based on 17 manuscripts, which highlight that dental care should consider a) prior preparation, b) environment and communication, c) adaptations during treatment, and d) collaboration among the care team. It is concluded that patients with autism attending dental consultations receive care like any other child. However, dental professionals acquire specific knowledge, skills, and techniques to treat these patients in the dental environment. In this context, it is essential to establish a collaborative relationship between the patient's family and the dentist, as this contributes to the success of the treatment. Keywords: autism, oral health, autism spectrum disorder, oral hygiene, dental care

Periodontal disease involves a chronic, progressively destructive state of the supporting tissues of the teeth, often caused by predisposing factors, with poor hygiene being the most common. The knowledge acquired by students during their undergraduate studies for managing this condition is crucial for their performance in dental practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge about periodontal disease among Dentistry students at the Catholic University of Cuenca, Azogues Campus, during the academic period March – August 2024. MATERIALS and METHODS: Data was collected through a previously validated survey by Díaz O (2023) directed at students from this university campus. The sample comprised 241 students from the fifth to the tenth cycle. RESULTS: A total of 235 individuals participated in the study. Periodontal knowledge was categorized as good by 48.5% of the participants and averaged by 36.17% of the participants. The sociodemographic variables studied, including gender, origin, academic cycle, and level of periodontal knowledge, showed no relative significance. Although most respondents were female, this had no significant impact on the level of knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: The research reveals that the students' knowledge level is generally good, highlighting the need to promote continuous education in diagnosis and prevention and develop appropriate strategies to improve the evaluated course. Keywords: periodontal disease, perception, knowledge, prevention, oral health.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) has played a pivotal role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, notably focusing on achieving herd immunity. Objective: The objective was to identify the side effects of COVID-19 vaccination on dental students and faculty staff at the Catholic University of Cuenca, Azogues Campus. Methodology: The study was quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional, involving 504 participants (470 students and 34 faculty members). The sample size was calculated using the Open Epi software, determining a minimum sample size of 288 units. Simple random sampling was employed with adherence to selection criteria. Results: Primary findings indicate that the Sinovac vaccine was predominantly used (28.82%), followed by Pfizer (22.22%). Of the participants, 42.71% received two doses plus a booster. Additionally, 42.01% reported no symptoms post-immunization. Among those who experienced symptoms, the most commonly reported were headache, stomach discomfort, general malaise, joint pain, bone pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, totaling 18.42%. In response to symptoms, self-medication was prevalent (20.83%), with paracetamol being administered in 3.13% of cases. Conclusion: The primary objective was to evaluate post-vaccination side effects, revealing that most of the study sample did not exhibit symptoms. Those who reported minor symptoms did not need emergency care and were managed with self-administered medications. Keywords: COVID-19, vaccine, inoculation, side effects, dosage

This work aims to write about the effects of increasing the temperature of the photopolymerization lamp used in dentistry on the pulp chamber. This systematic review employed the PRISMA method to show the search process of articles in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from 2016 to 2023. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and keywords linked to the research topic were used. A total of 82,376 articles were obtained; then, applying the inclusion, exclusion, and selection criteria, twenty-five full-text articles related to the increase in temperature during Photopolymerization lamp use and its effect on the pulp were selected. The increase in the temperature of the photopolymerization lamp causes effects that can affect the dental pulp, causing sensitivity, reversible pulpitis, and irreparable lesions such as irreversible pulpitis and necrosis. Keywords: Dental pulp, Led light curing, polymerization, light curing.
