Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a frequently occurring pregnancy complication, being the most common cause of worldwide maternal death and the second most frequent in Ecuador. Objective: To identify the risk factors associated with postpartum hemorrhage, based on current and available scientific evidence. Results: According to several studies, the main risk factors with statistical association with PPH were uterine atony, injuries or tears soft tissues and vaginal duct, placental debris retention and coagulation alterations. Conclusions: The main associated factors appeared before and afeter delivery. The most important antepartum important antepartum factors were induction and conduction of labor, uterine overdistension, fetal macrosomia, instrumented delivery, cesarean section, chorioamnionitis, uterine myomatosis, multiparity, inadequate prenatal control, prior placenta and a history of maternal anemia, hypertensive disorders, miscarriages and mainly a history of PPH in previous deliveries, postpartum factors were represented by tears or injuries to soft tissues and the vaginal tract and episiotomy
