It is a common condition that can lead to complications in the mother and newborn, affecting successful breastfeeding. Despite the evolution of medicine over time, puerperal mastitis remains a relevant clinical problem that requires comprehensive and effective care, with a prevalence ranging from 3 to 33% in lactating women. Objectives: To establish updated and relevant information from scientific literature regarding acute mastitis to understand its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. To review different bibliographies to get an update on the diagnosis and treatment of puerperal mastitis, providing up-to-date and pertinent information to improve early detection, effective management, and clinical outcomes in lactating women. Methodology: A literature review was conducted using several bibliographic search engines to find articles, clinical cases, meta-analyses, and theses with proper information from the last five years, emphasizing an update on the diagnosis and treatment of puerperal mastitis to accomplish this process, the PRISMA method was implemented. Results: Through the literature review, an update on data collection on the diagnosis and treatment of puerperal mastitis was obtained, considering that this information is from the last five years and was gathered from articles and theses published in reliable bibliographic search engines.
