- ÍtemAcceso AbiertoBeneficios de la traqueostomia percutánea vs traqueostomia abierta(Universidad Católica de Cuenca., 2023) Andrade Castillo, Doménica Janneth; Urgiles Rivas, Marco Vinicio; 0302888672Critical patients admitted to the ICU with prolonged intubation due to various clinical and surgical circumstances require tracheostomy to maintain ventilation and prevent potential short and long-term complications. Nowadays, two types of tracheostomy are known: open and percutaneous. However, no consensus in the literature justifies the benefit of choosing one technique over the other, but percutaneous tracheostomy is gaining importance daily by avoiding the risk of contagion. Objective: To compare both techniques regarding procedure duration and peri- and postoperative complications. Method: A descriptive and qualitative bibliographic review was conducted by searching for articles published in the last five years in virtual databases such as UpToDate, PubMed, Elsevier, SciELO, Springer, and Wiley Online Library. Results: Patients with respiratory failure, neurocritical conditions, oncological issues, and trauma requiring intubation underwent tracheostomy. In these patients, it helped reduce sedation, assisted ventilation, weaning, and the decannulation process; percutaneous tracheostomy was a safe, fast, and efficient alternative feasible at the patient's bedside. Minor bleeding was the most common complication in both techniques. Conclusions: Tracheostomy is indicated in patients with acute respiratory disorders undergoing Mechanical Ventilation; in intubated patients, it helps reduce sedation, duration of assisted ventilation, and ICU stay. Percutaneous tracheostomy assumes more advantages over open tracheostomy, reducing complications like bleeding and infection.
